Xabi Alonso Vows to Restore Real Madrid’s Glory as New Head Coach
Xabi Alonso was officially unveiled on Monday as the new manager of Real Madrid, signing a three-year deal that runs until June 2028. The former midfield star takes the reins from Carlo Ancelotti, who has left the club to lead the Brazilian national team.
Alonso steps in following a disappointing season for Madrid, which ended without silverware. The team fell short in all major competitions, losing their La Liga crown to arch-rivals Barcelona, who also outclassed them in the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup finals. Their Champions League campaign ended in a painful quarter-final exit at the hands of Arsenal.
Despite the challenges ahead, Alonso expressed optimism during his presentation at the club’s Valdebebas training facility. He emphasized the squad’s immense talent and potential, describing the opportunity to manage Madrid as both an honor and a motivating challenge.
The 43-year-old highlighted his determination to unlock the full capabilities of his players and forge a squad capable of reclaiming domestic and European dominance.
Alonso, who enjoyed a successful playing spell with Madrid between 2009 and 2014, helped the club win six major titles, including the Champions League triumph that secured their historic 10th title, known as La Décima. Now, he returns with an impressive managerial reputation, having recently led Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten season that delivered both the Bundesliga and German Cup titles.
In his remarks, Alonso described returning to Madrid as a deeply emotional moment, likening it to a new beginning and reaffirming his long-standing bond with the club and its supporters.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez welcomed Alonso back with high praise, calling the appointment a significant moment for the club. He emphasized Alonso’s deep understanding of Madrid’s culture and values, hailing him as “one of our own.”
Madrid’s campaign under Alonso will begin with the FIFA Club World Cup later this summer, as the club looks to rebuild under his leadership and recapture their status as the dominant force in football.
