Trump Offers Canada Free Access to ‘Golden Dome’

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Canada could join his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense program at no cost — but only if it agrees to become the 51st state of the United States.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed Canada “very much” wants to be part of the multibillion-dollar missile shield project, but said it would have to pay $61 billion to participate unless it agrees to join the U.S. formally. “They are considering the offer!” he added, in what some observers have interpreted as political provocation rather than policy.

Trump formally unveiled the “Golden Dome” plan last week, a strategic defense system he claims will protect the U.S. and allies from various missile threats. Estimated to cost $175 billion, the project is said to be operational by 2029 if implemented.

Canada has not officially responded to Trump’s latest remarks. However, Prime Minister Mark Carney recently acknowledged “high-level” discussions about Canada’s potential participation in the missile program, emphasizing that Canada would remain a sovereign nation.

While the U.S. and Canada currently collaborate on continental defense through NORAD, Trump’s conditions, especially the implication of Canadian statehood — are expected to intensify already strained political relations.

Defense analysts have expressed skepticism about both the feasibility and cost of the proposed missile shield, warning that the true price tag could far exceed Trump’s estimates and raise complex geopolitical implications.
