Six Lives Lost, 60 Injured in Kogi Crash

A devastating road accident in Lokoja, Kogi State, has claimed six lives and left 60 others injured. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday around 3:00 p.m. near the Zone 8 Roundabout along Hassan Katsina Road.

According to the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi, Samuel Oyedeji, an articulated truck traveling from Bauchi to Enugu lost control, leading to the fatal crash.

“The remains of the six deceased have been deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary,” Oyedeji confirmed on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as emergency responders worked tirelessly to rescue trapped victims and clear the wreckage.

“It was a horrific sight. People were trapped, and it took hours to clear the scene,” a local resident said.

The accident underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures, particularly in Lokoja, a major transit hub connecting northern and southern Nigeria.

Oyedeji urged drivers, especially those operating heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise caution on the roads. He also called on the government to prioritize road infrastructure upgrades and enforce stricter traffic regulations.

“As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, this tragedy serves as a somber reminder of our shared responsibility to ensure safer roads for everyone,” he added.
