Popular Shawarma Vendor Killed in Suspected Cult Attack in Ikorodu, Lagos
A well-known shawarma vendor, identified simply as Benjamin or “Benji,” was fatally shot by suspected cultists at Ebutte-Ipakodo in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Tuesday evening.
Eyewitnesses said the attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. at Benjamin’s roadside stall, Chibest Shawarma, while he was attending to customers. Samson, a local resident who witnessed the incident, said two men approached the vendor under the guise of buying food before suddenly pulling out guns and shooting him multiple times at close range.
According to Samson, the assailants are believed to be rival cult members on a revenge mission. “Everyone on the spot and those who heard the gunshots ran for their lives,” he said.
Another source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the attack, revealed that the gunmen fled immediately after the shooting, leaving Benjamin bleeding on the ground. The chaotic scene delayed medical assistance, and Benjamin was later rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Residents described Benjamin as a hardworking and jovial individual who was well-liked in the community. “Benji was not just popular in the area; he was friendly and related well with almost everyone. His death has shocked and caused panic among residents,” a social media post about the late vendor read.
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, for comment were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.
In a related incident, a 16-year-old boy named Mustapha was killed by a stray bullet during a suspected cult clash in the Oyingbo area of Ebute Metta, Lagos. The shooting occurred after a peace walk organized to address cult violence degenerated into a confrontation, resulting in indiscriminate gunfire.
