Pope Francis Advocates Debt Forgiveness for Poor Countries in 2025 World Day of Peace Message

In his 2025 World Day of Peace message, Pope Francis called for debt forgiveness for poor nations to help them overcome economic struggles and achieve development.

The Pope’s message, delivered by the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Martins, emphasized the theme of the year’s event, “Forgive Us Our Trespasses, Grant Us Your Peace.”

Pope Francis highlighted the importance of mercy and forgiveness, drawing attention to God’s abundant mercy and urging the world to reflect on this divine forgiveness at the beginning of 2025. He stressed the need for nations to forgive each other’s debts, particularly for those countries burdened by unmanageable international debt.

Recalling Saint John Paul II’s call during the Great Jubilee of 2000, the Pope appealed to wealthier countries to consider reducing or canceling the debts of nations unable to repay them. He proposed the creation of a new financial framework based on solidarity and global harmony, where nations work together to help the most indebted and vulnerable countries recover and grow.

The Pope’s message also encouraged individuals to embody hope and generosity in their relationships with others, especially in forgiving those who have wronged them, to create a world of peace and healing.
