Nigerian Gospel Singer Says UK Police Treated Him as Suspect After Reporting Robbery
Muyiwa Olarewaju, a UK-based Nigerian gospel singer, has shared his experience of being investigated as a suspect after narrowly escaping a robbery earlier this year.
In a video posted on his Twitter, Olarewaju described how, in February, a young white man attempted to break into his vehicle, smashing the window around 5:30 a.m. on his way to work. After the incident, he reported the attack to the police and directed them to nearby surveillance cameras that had captured the event.
However, things took an unexpected turn when, after reviewing the footage, the police started investigating him instead. “I was now the suspect,” he explained. Despite being the one who reported the crime, Olarewaju was called in for questioning and had to hire a lawyer for defense.
The singer further revealed that although the police never found the suspect caught on camera, he was investigated for affray, a charge typically related to public fighting. After three months of investigation, the police dropped the case due to a lack of evidence.
Olarewaju advised the public to stay cautious and be legally prepared in case of unexpected situations. “If you don’t have legal representation already, have it ready just in case you go through a thing like this,” he said.
