JAMB Introduces Mock UTME for Candidates Under 16

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new initiative to introduce a mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) specifically for candidates below the age of 16.

According to the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the mock UTME is not intended for tertiary admission but rather as a trial examination for underage candidates seeking to assess their preparedness.

During a media briefing in Lagos on Sunday, Oloyede clarified that the mock examination is designed for candidates who are ineligible for admission into universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education due to the age requirement. He emphasized that candidates must be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2025, to qualify for tertiary admission.

Exceptionally gifted candidates under the age of 15 may be considered if they achieve a minimum UTME score of 280 and demonstrate outstanding academic performance in senior secondary and post-UTME examinations.

Oloyede also announced that the sale of forms for the 2025 UTME will begin on January 31 and end on March 5. The mock examination will take place on February 23, while the main UTME is scheduled for March 8.

Candidates who wish to gain experience in computer-based testing without pursuing admission may also register for a trial-only mock exam.

In preparation for the 2025 UTME, JAMB has screened and provisionally approved 870 computer-based test centres, an increase from the number of centres approved last year.

The initiative reflects JAMB’s commitment to refining its processes while accommodating the needs of all candidates and maintaining its policy on age limits for tertiary education.
