Iranians React to Lifting of WhatsApp Ban Amidst Broader Internet Restrictions
The lifting of a two-year ban on WhatsApp in Iran has drawn mixed reactions from residents, with some expressing indifference amid the ongoing challenges posed by broader internet restrictions.
Ardavan Yousefi, a cafe owner in Tehran, commented that the move felt inconsequential, as he still relies on VPNs to access other popular platforms like Instagram and Telegram, which remain blocked.
The decision by Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace, which also restored access to Google Play services, comes at a time of heightened economic and social strain in the country.
With high inflation, energy shortages, and air pollution impacting daily life, many Iranians see the lift of the ban as a small concession aimed at easing public discontent.
Digital rights experts like Amir Rashidi from the Miaan Group suggest the move was intended to generate minimal satisfaction, as WhatsApp is less commonly used in Iran compared to other messaging apps.
The decision to lift restrictions on WhatsApp and Google Play follows a series of internet blockages implemented after protests broke out in September 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.
The protests over Iran’s strict dress code led to widespread internet censorship, including the suspension of several online services crucial for business and communication.
Despite President Masoud Pezeshkian’s promises to ease restrictions, opposition from conservative lawmakers in parliament remains strong, with concerns over maintaining Islamic values and preventing foreign influence.
The lifting of the WhatsApp ban has been seen as an initial step, with reports hinting at potential future changes, such as allowing access to platforms like YouTube and Telegram through controlled portals.
However, many Iranians, such as software developer Amir Heidari, view the WhatsApp reinstatement as a small but positive sign for internet freedom.
Yet, for others like fitness trainer Elaheh Khojasteh, the decision does not address the deeper issues at play, and more significant reforms are needed to resolve the country’s broader challenges.
