Great Ife Students’ Union Warns Against Cultism on OAU Campus

The Great Ife Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has issued a strong warning to students and the university community to steer clear of cultism and cult-like activities on campus.

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by the union’s President, Omoboriowo Isaac; Secretary General, Babatimehin Kínfẹ́ọsi; and Public Relations Officer, Aka Daniel, the leaders expressed concern over “certain cult-like movements and activities by some individuals on campus.”

“The Great Ife Students’ Union maintains a zero-tolerance policy for cultism and cult-like activities on Obafemi Awolowo University campus. The sacrifices of George Iwilade (Afrika) and the OAU 5 remain a cornerstone of our legacy, and we are committed to ensuring their memories are honored,” the statement read.

OAU has a long-standing reputation as a cultism-free institution, a legacy that dates back to the July 10, 1999 cult attack, which claimed the lives of five students, including then-Secretary-General George Iwilade. Since then, the union has held annual commemorations on July 10 to honor the victims and reaffirm its commitment to eradicating cultism.

The union urged students to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. “Any individual, whether a student or non-student, found engaging in cultism or related activities will face the full force of the law,” the statement added.

The union reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining the peaceful and secure environment that has defined the OAU campus for decades.
