The dance community is in mourning following the unexpected death of South African dancer and choreographer Dada Masilo, who passed away in hospital over the weekend at the age of 39.

Her family confirmed her death, citing a brief illness as the cause.

Masilo, born in Soweto, was known for her dynamic energy and fearless approach to dance. She revolutionized contemporary dance by integrating African dance traditions with classic European ballet, particularly through her re-imagined versions of iconic ballets like “Swan Lake” and “Giselle.”

Masilo’s contributions to the dance world were recently recognized when she received the Positano Leonide Massine lifetime achievement award in September 2024, which celebrated her powerful and relevant work.

Her groundbreaking choreography reshaped South African contemporary dance and was praised internationally, with companies like Joburg Ballet and the University of Johannesburg’s arts department highlighting her creativity and influence.

Throughout her career, Masilo continued to inspire artists and audiences globally, with her work being showcased in the UK and beyond. Her legacy as an extraordinary role model and trailblazer for African dancers is expected to endure, even as the world mourns the loss of her brilliant light.
