Anambra Police Rescue Pregnant Woman Detained by Vigilantes
The Anambra State Police Command has intervened to rescue a pregnant woman who was allegedly detained by members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) in Okija. The woman had been held at the vigilante office on the orders of her husband over an alleged theft.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday. He revealed that the police responded to the situation after the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, saw a viral video detailing the woman’s detention.
“The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman allegedly detained over a case of stealing by her husband in a security office at Okija,” Ikenga said. “The report of the incident was intercepted in a trending video by the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, who then ordered a rescue operation and an investigation into the matter.”
Ikenga also highlighted the Commissioner’s strong disapproval of such actions, stressing that the police would not tolerate inhumane treatment or indiscriminate detentions by vigilante members. “The CP frowns on such acts of indiscriminate detention and inhuman treatment of suspects by some members of the Anambra Vigilante Group. He assured the state that the root cause of these incidents would be addressed to prevent future occurrences,” he added.
Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police has taken steps to address the actions of certain unprofessional vigilante members. “The CP has also initiated necessary moves with relevant authorities to check the excesses of the few unprofessional AVG members in the state,” Ikenga said.
The police have assured the public that they are committed to ensuring accountability and protecting human rights in the state.
