Police Resume Issuance of Tinted Glass Permits Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has resumed the issuance of tinted glass permits nationwide, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who said the move addresses widespread complaints from motorists over harassment by security operatives for using factory-fitted tinted windows.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has reactivated the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) nationwide through a secure and user-friendly digital platform available at https://possap.gov.ng,” the statement read.

Adejobi explained that many modern vehicles now come equipped with factory-tinted glass, which has prompted the need for a transparent and standardized system to regulate their use while ensuring public safety.

“Tinted vehicles have often been exploited for criminal purposes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, ‘one-chance’ scams, and other forms of banditry. Their use hampers police visibility and impedes effective law enforcement, thereby contributing to public insecurity,” he said.

The reactivated permit system, the police noted, aims to identify legitimate users, such as individuals with medical conditions or members of the security community, while preventing misuse.

To streamline the process, applicants are required to complete the process online, with verification through National Identification Number (NIN), Tax Identification Number (TIN), biometric capture, and background checks. The digital permits will feature QR codes, with a 72-hour processing window.

A 30-day grace period, starting May 1, 2025, has been approved to allow motorists to obtain the permits. After this window, enforcement will begin.

“Enforcement will commence at the end of this period. Officers found engaging in unprofessional conduct, such as extortion or harassment, in the course of enforcement will be decisively dealt with,” Adejobi warned.

The IGP assured Nigerians of the Force’s dedication to modern, transparent, and citizen-oriented policing, urging the public to cooperate for safer roads and improved national security.
